The Colors of a New England Autumn…..

Orangetree
It's no secret that Autumn is my favorite time of year.  The humidity of the dog days of summer have all but disappeared, the biting bugs have stopped biting and the days are almost always warm and sunny with the nights turning cool and crisp….so wonderful!  I wait all year long for the short 2 months that we get to enjoy the amazing display of color that Mother Nature blesses us with up here in the North Country.

Ken and I took a ride last Sunday around Lake Winnepesaukee winding through the small towns of Moultonborough, Melvin Village and Tuftonboro to take in the beautiful scenery.  I love the reflection of the trees in the water here reminding boat owners that it's almost time to dock the boats for the winter.

As a child I used to love walking through the piles of leaves that accumulated as they fall off the trees.  Even still when I hear those leaves crunch under my feet and smell the leaves as they are getting ready to crumble, I remember those days of raking huge piles of leaves to jump in with my friends.  Smells of warm apple crisp and hot spiced cider…..and Halloween!  So many wonderful things to love about Autumn in New England.

Many of the colors that I create in the dye-pot are inspired from the colors that surround me come this time of year.  The deep reds that are never a true red, but a combination of reds, greens or reds and orange or purply reds tinged with brown.  Truly beautiful colors, don't you think?

…and the colors on my knitting needles are some of the colors that Autumn inspires.

What are some of your favorite Autumn memories?

  1. You described autumn in New England perfectly. I remember going for Sunday drives and stopping for apples, cider and cider donuts. Mmmm. And I remember jumping in piles of leaves and loving the feel of them all around me – they crackled and crunched and they smelled like everything good about the world.

  2. I also love the crackle and crunch of fallen leaves and Doug and I have been out walking in the woods so much this fall. As far as being a kid…late fall camping and cranberry harvests!

  3. I love walking in the leaves and jumping into the piles of racked leaves. Sadly people blow their leaves into bags and they’re gone before you know it. New England has the best fall colors!

  4. Being outside on the cool, crisp days. I agree – there is just something about the smell, when the cool air makes things smell fresh again. And the colors – like the sunset of the year as fall sinks into the darkness of winter.

  5. I miss the smell of burning leaves although I know that was not good for the environment. Just yesterday we were moseying through the small towns of southern New Hampshire/Vermont enjoying the beautiful weather and fall colors. Also visited Harrisville and Green Mountain Spinnery! My sainted husband was very patient with me.

  6. I love the colors of fall, too. And I love hunting for the “perfect leaf.” (Of course, there always seem to be MANY “perfect” leaves.) When I was a kid, I used to like to press my most perfect leaf finds in heavy books to save them for awhile.

  7. Hummm…just the excitment of the changing seasons; enjoying the new school year, and figuring out a Halloween costume from the old clothes stored in grandma’s upstairs bedrooms. I misread your question the first time through and thought you asked about colora of fall that we liked. So, I’m just going to be presumptous and tell you anyway. There is a great deep burgundy leaf color (it may have an underlying orange component) and combined with one of the beautiful brilliant yellows of the season is stunning!
