Frog Hole?

Frog in sock

Don't ya just hate it when this happens?  These are my Koigu socks that I just finished last summer.  BUMMER!  I guess my days of sock knitting with just merino are coming to an end.  I have a few skeins of Sundara Merino and a few skeins of koigu, but you can be sure I will be adding some nylon reinforcement to the heels if I make socks with them.  It's disappointing to have all that work come apart in such a short time.

Now granted, I did wear those brown socks a lot.  Brown just seems to be a color that I tend to gravitate towards and Koigu is wonderfully pampering to the feet, but at 25.00 plus for a pair of socks, you hope to get more than one seasonn out of a pair, especially a pair that took weeks to complete.

New Tesserae

So digging deep into the stash of my own yarns, I dug out Norwegian Woods.  It's funny, when I dyed this one up I really wasn't all that thrilled with it, but I thought it might be a good guy's sock yarn, so I kept it in the line up.  I have to admit, now that I am knitting with it, I really really like it!  Lots of soft warm taupey browns and mossy greens.  Yep, I like brown :).

Once I picked out the yarn, I went searching for a new sock pattern.  I looked high and low and just could not settle on anything that I thought would compliment this yarn.  I know….with all of the sock patterns out there, that does sound a bit silly, doesn't it?

Old tesserae
The socks that I tend to wear the most are the Tesserae socks that I made last winter.  I L.O.V.E. these socks…..so I thought why not, why not make another pair.  They are probably THE most comfortable pair of handknit socks I have made yet.  I like that there is no ribbing at the top and they just fit well. 🙂

Heck, I just might just make a few pairs 🙂

  1. That’s so disappointing! I am feeling a lot better about all of my afterthought heels, now. They may not be the greatest heel, but they are easy to replace.

  2. Funny- Kathy, Laurie and I were having just that conversation about the holey perils of using merino for sock. Those well placed eyes in your sock holes is hysterical!

  3. Few yarns are as nice as your sock yarn. Some socks are meant for special days only…that way they last longer. Good sock yarns are for daily wear. The more socks you own the fewer you’ll loose, too.

  4. Wow. lol. I had to do a double take. I’ve had that happen many times. Kind of the bummer on nice merino for socks. And funny, I liked jewel tones until a few years ago. I find myself more and more turning to browns. I think it’s like wine… as you age, your tastes change. I used to only like whites but now I’m drinking more and more red… weird.

  5. I know I have made a few socks without reinforcing thread and got holes within 6 months. Now I always use woolly nylon in the heels and toes. So far so good.

  6. I made a pair of socks for my FC and they were 100% Rowan wool. I hate that there is a hole in one of them. I’d like to know if anyone repairs socks. I had thought of frogging to the heel flap and reknitting. I’ve seen a weaving technique that makes a replacement patch that is invisible to the eye. Can you do that with yarn?

  7. HOW did you stuff that frog in those socks??? hahahah. LOL! Koigu is notorious for holes. As if Mountain Colors Weavers Quarters, which used to be my favorite sock yarn and now I have holes. A bunch of holes.

  8. When you say you will be using nylon for the heels, what do you use? Do you ply nylon thread with the yarn? I’ve had the same trouble with my all Merino socks.

  9. What kind of froggie is that? So funny–not the socks, the frog. Thanks for the tip about the yarn and the heel. I don’t know a lot about which yarns are better for socks; I just go for the color and texture! I appreciate the tip!

  10. here, here . . . i have just had 3 pair of socks in a row go out at the heels . . perfectly good socks except for that! i’m finally convinced that it doesn’t make sense to knit everyday socks with yarn that doesn’t have nylon (HINT!!). david is getting such great wear out of the wool/nylon blend socks i’ve knit for him . . .
(going off now to find some sturdier yarns in the stash to make myself some socks)
