You can see from the picture, what my weekend was about….. Hannah being of that age where baking is a fun thing, kept me busy all day Saturday making all kinds of cookies. We made gingerbread men (very funky looking, I may add), sugar cookies, chocolate crackle cookies, peanutbutter kiss cookies and my new favorite Lime Shortbread cookies. You can find the recipe here. Cindy has a recipe exchange going on, so go over and add a recipe. Thanks Cindy for the chocolate crackle recipe….YUM!

I have great admiration for those of you who can crank socks out quickly….fast knitters….which I am not. This weekend, my other obsession was knitting this sock. Literally, my backside was pasted to a chair knitting in between baking, and I only got this far, but I do want to try and finish them for Christmas. Silly I know to plan something so late, but what can I say…..the inspiration came late :-).
I hesitated to show this sock as you can see very clearly the problem I have with plain stockinette sock knitting. It’s my nemesis…….ladders. The pattern does call for a purl stitch down the back center of the sock, but you can see the ladder (and trust me there’s a matching one on the other side) that does not belong there. Try as hard as I can to pull that stitch between needles tight, I always miss the mark. Thankfully the recipient of this sock will not care…LOL.
If anyone is curious, I did rip out my first attempt as I was pretty certain they would be too loose. Given that I did not have a 2.25 mm needle, I decided to try a 2.0mm and see where that got me. I am thankful again, that the recipient has those Olive OYL legs. They fit me comfortably and I know that they will fit him as well, but I think that they would be too snug for the average man. 2.25mm needles would be a much better choice and are now at the top of my knitting list.
And now a little website Randomness….
I want to share two websites today with you all. The first one is my all time favorite Christmas card/song. I shared it last year with you all and much to my joy, it was uploaded again for this Christmas. Go take a visit.………..it will surely make you smile 🙂 I know I do every time I visit…and I visit alot…LOL.
And now a bit of sadness and a request for some prayers. Some of you may remember one of my puppies from last year….Bibbity. I was originally going to keep her, but a little girl needing a friend came into my life and Bibbity (now Izzy) went to be her companion. This little girl, Morgan, has a form of cancer and needs your prayers, as she is struggling. You can read about Morgan and her Mom’s struggle to help her here. My heart breaks for this family and the others who are struggling with childhood cancers, especially at this time of year. Light a candle, say a prayer or send some healing thoughts to these little ones.

DH’s friend is also battling cancer and we really don’t expect him to survive more than a couple months (maybe not even that long). His fight, as with most cancer battles, is awful. My heart goes out to Morgan, her mom and family.
Thanks for p osting that Merry Christmas link. It’s great fun!!

I get ladders on my socks when I use dpns. That’s why I switched to Magic Loop – no ladders. And I know, I know, I still haven’t shown you the technique. SPA?
Love the holiday card and prayers for Morgan are now underway.
And thanks for the link for the chocolate crackles. I’ve been searching for a new chocolate cookie recipe this year and these are perfect!

Thoughts of the little ones struggling through such a horrible illness keeps us humble and thankful. May her Morgan and her family find peace through the Holiday season and always.
Ladders are a part of knitting socks. They don’t really cause any problems and don’t show up that much in the all of it. Acceptance of what is, is a good thing to learn;-)

All you have to do is look at the picture of her and Izzy to know what a great decision it was to let them be best friends.

Those cookies look wonderful, I’m drooling. The sock looks good too – gorgeous color and I think the ladders will work out when blocked.

I don’t see any ladders. Really, I think the knitter is the one that really sees them – the rest of the world is blind to them!
Prayers for Morgan and her family!

I knit the first stitch on the new needle as normal – I’m a fairly tight knitter – then pull the second stitch as tight as possible. For some reason (probably that pesky physics) it works for me. The only socks I’ve made where the ladders persisted after a good bath were made of 100% cotton. I don’t make socks out of 100% cotton any more ;).
