Mama Said There Would Be Days Like This…. Nov. 17, 2006

Hatchtown

Did you ever have one of those days when almost anything you did, just didn’t work out??  When everything you touched fell apart?  Well today was one of those days here.  I had grand ideas of all the things I was going to get done around the house, but………………………

You have witnessed me complaining more than once about the heavy workload I have had in my worklife….and wonders of all wonders, I have finally managed to get the workload to a point where I am starting to think that I may actually have a real life again…LOL.  So to honor that real life, I was going to do all kinds of domestic things today.

Well……….I vacumed the kitchen, dog room and mudroom and then dragged the hoover floormate out (I love how this machine sucks up the dirty water).  LO and behold the dirty water from the last time I cleaned the floors was still in the holding tank. (I won’t tell you how long ago that was…eek!!), so I pulled it all apart, cleaned it and started cleaning the floor.  Damn, the suction isn’t working and dirty water is pooling on the floor….what the heck??  I drag the machine over to the sink, pull it apart again and figure that there is probably a fur ball ( I know, hard to believe….) stuck in it.

Hmmm….still not working……..double damn!  This time I go and pull out the wire snake that my husband made out of a coat hanger and stick it up the suction portion of the Hoover and can you guess??  Yep…………I got that sucker stuck in there………triple damn!

So in desperation, I pulled out my old mop, filled up the bucket with a bleach water mix, figuring I would give the dog room an extra good scrubbing with all the rain we have had and damn again, I broke the top of the mop handle.  I ended up with a big ole nasty blister from that jaggard edge.

When the hubby came home, he managed to get the wire that was stuck, unstuck and noticed the filter that was sitting on the counter.  Duh!  The machine doesn’t suck up the water without that damn filter….uggh!  I guess that I have just lost touch with that domestic goddess side of me…sigh.

So much for all the things I had planned……..floors washed, laundry caught up, windows cleaned and dogs bathed.  I quit after the floors and laundry and spent the rest of the afternoon, playing with the spindles.  Well, maybe I played with those spindles in between each fiasco too……..I had to balance the bad with the good, right??  Yin and yang, so they say…..

Next post I will talk about my thoughts on spindle spinning vs wheel spinning…..I want to think on it a bit 🙂

  1. I’m really looking forward to your thoughts on the wheel vs. spindle. My new spindle just arrived this week – it’s way easier this time around – now that I know how to spin on a wheel.

  3. I guess it happens once in a while. I believe that husbands are in charge of all machines….so happy to hear it all worked out in the end. I also spin on a spindle and spin on a wheel….looking forward to your opinion. Have a nice weekend!

  5. I’ve had days like that and they’re no fun. And I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on spindles vs. wheels. Margene and I have been talking about that A LOT lately.

  7. Couldn’t help but laugh at your “domestic goddess” day! LOL Lord, is there anyone out there who DOESN’T have days like that? I can’t wait for your next post…I’m not a spinner…not a clue how it’s done…but for some odd reason I’ve been checking out sites that have those little spindle thingies and keep thinking I would like to learn to do that!!! So, I’m waiting for your next post. 🙂

  9. I had one of those days myself yesterday. I gave up.
I’m looking forward to your next post. I am developing a long-overdue appreciation for the spindle after being fairly convinced that the wheel was superior. I’m only now starting to appreciate the merits of both.

  11. I think it was just a sign that you weren’t meant to clean that day. Instead, you were supposed to be spinning. It would have been a lot worse if you had planned a fiber day and everything went wrong. Then, you would have had to resort to housework.

  13. To heck with the cleaning when it’s going like that. You absolutely made the right decision by chucking it at that point and nursing your creativity. Spin on!

I can’t wait for your next post. I love your yarn, much better than mine. I’d love to compare spindle spinning notes!

  17. Yikes! Now I don’t feel so bad about the raglan top-down cardigan I started five times over the weekend. I’m using Peace Fleece in a lovely deep green, and I really want to knit the yarn into a sweater that I will love to wear. I finally resorted to using my Sweater Wizard, and if this incarnation doesn’t work, I’m giving up on the whole raglan idea. Luckily, the Peace Fleece can hold up to allot of frogging. I started spinning on a spindle and quickly moved onto a wheel—winding onto the spindle broke the rythm too much, and my thumbs were starting too hurt.
