NETA SPA 2009

Hoarfrost display

Another successful Spa has come and gone and  I think that fun was had by all.  Each year the coordinators ask everyone how the Spa experience could be improved upon and each year they truly listen.  So much so that this year was completely seamless as far as I could tell.  Lots of fun, fiber and friends!

Merino_silk roving

The last 2 weeks have been full to the brim with dye pots, yarn and
fiber.  I love trying to come up with a few new things each year.  This year I made sure to have a full supply of Opulence dyed in many different colors and lots of roving.  Pictured above is some Merino/Tussah silk.  I have to admit, I snagged one of the teal color blends for myself.

Maplewing Display

The star of my booth however was this incredibly lovely faroese shawl now known as MaplewingAnne mailed the shawl to me the other day and I will tell you that I gasped when I saw it.  This shawl is a true work of art…..absolutely STUNNING!.

Modeling Maplewing

I am not the only one who thinks so as you can see.  Anyone who saw her….loved her.  The shawl is so flattering for most everyone, especially given that it doesn't point to that part of us we would rather not have pointed too. 🙂

Deciding on yarn

Hmmm……Mystic Mountain Pine or New England Red?
(I will be taking pre~orders for kits later in the week on my website)

Hannah1
I was fortunate to have a little helper come along with me.  Hannah has been working fiber fairs with me since she was 10 years old.  Thru the years she has learned how to do math, make change, listen carefully and most important for a shy kid……..she has learned how to talk to people.  It's been fun watching her come out of her shell and really enjoy these events.

This year Hannah had some candy with her as a fund raiser for her trip to Washington DC.  Many people stopped by and gave her a donation and told her to keep the candy……Hannah was blown away by the generosity of so many.  Thank you for being so kind!

It goes without saying that the very best part of any fiber event is spending time with friends………..my "peeps".
Laurie and Kathy

Laurie and Kathy sharing smiles….

Manise

Blogless Manise always encouraging…and…enabling. 🙂

Judy

Judy's booth looked lovely with so many beautiful colors!

.

OhCanada_finished_long
I also had a picture of Jean and I proving that we actually were in the same spot at the same time, but I looked like a convict, so I will just let that picture stay in the folder…LOL.

I wish that I had more pictures to share, but unfortunately I did not feel comfortable leaving my camera downstairs in the vending room while I was too busy to watch it.  You may be wondering why that is so…..

Sadly, my lovely Oh!Canada shawl was stolen from my booth during a very busy period.  There were times when it was busy enough that Hannah and I could not watch everything….and never would I have worried about someone taking a knitted item.  I have lost the occasional skein of yarn and maybe a pattern or hand cream, but never something so dear.  I guess I will have to think of a way to secure the knitted samples that I display.

Oh Canada is my most favorite shawl to wear and she will be greatly missed.  If the person who borrowed her reads my blog and would like to send her back home, I will glady welcome her back with no questions asked.

Her home is:
The Woolen Rabbit
PO Box 330
Conway, NH  03818

As I close this post I want to give a big THANK YOU to the Divas who organize and tirelessly work on making sure that each one of us has a wonderful experience at Spa.  Thanks grrls!

  1. The event seemed wonderful! Living out in the boon docks, so to speaks, makes attending such fanatastic affairs the stuff of dreams…However, it’s more than sad that you “lost” the “O Canada” shawl. We don’t want to think that knitters who understand the attention and the process that go behind each beloved FO would ever knowingly break the bond by “borrowing” in this way. May that person wear the shawl in true understanding of what they have done and what it really means…

  2. Glad you had a wonderful time, and SOOOO sorry about the Oh Canada shawl. How many people were at this event, anyway? Really boggles my mind that someone would lift something like this, but it has seemed to happen (or some variation of it) a few too many times for it to surprise us anymore, I guess. So sad.

  3. May the person who lifted O Canada have a change of heart, and anonymously ship her home NOW.
The rest of the event sounds so beautiful – and it’s so nice to see all those familiar faces.
Wish I had been there too!
    Many ((hugs))

  4. I was so very sad to hear about your Oh! Canada going walkabout and a pair of knitted socks from another booth as well. It would really restore a lot of faith in humanity were she to come home again, one can always hope.

  5. I was so sad about your Oh Canada. Karma dude- hopefully the person realizes how wrong that was and returns her quickly to her rightful owner.
Lovely as always seeing you! Your booth was gorgeous.

  6. I’m glad you had a great weekend. I don’t live very far from Freeport, and I wanted to make it down, but there were too many obstacles. I appreciate the pictures you have posted. I’m SO sorry your shawl was stolen. How awful. What is wrong with people?

  7. Kim! How awful! Given the thefts that occurred at the larger events recently (MDSW, etc), I guess I’m not all that surprised, though. I’m sorry this happened to you. A thousand poxes on the thief.

  8. It looks like such a good time, but to be marred with the loss of your shawl is so sad! It’s knowing fiber people can be “bad” that hurts as much as the loss of the shawl.

  9. As a new spinner, I can’t wait to join in the wonderfulness of SPA in the future. I’m deeply sadden to hear that someone in the fiber community has broken trust by taking your “O Canada” shawl. I agree with Rosemarie’s comments that knitters should admire and appreciate the hard work that goes into such a wonderful piece. Rather that “borrow” someone garment they should work to learn how to create their own. Let’s hope that the person reads your blog and returns your shawl.

  10. Looks like everyone had a good time. I am disappointed that someone would think it’s okay to take something that does not belong to them. Has no one got boundaries anymore? If an adult took Oh Canada, what could they be teaching their children it’s okay to do if no one is looking? It’s a sorry soul to be sure.

Your booth was just over the top enablement. I could not resist.

  15. How can a knitter steal another’s knitting knowing who much work is involved? You are being so nice. I would say there is a special place in Hell for such people.

  16. I’m blown away by the theft of your shawl….may the thief have many sleepless nights and get the flu. One of these years I’m going to get myself to SPA, but I just have a thing about driving to Maine in February!

  20. That is terrible that someone would walk off with your shawl. I can’t believe a crafter could ever do that after knowing how much heart and soul goes into a project. I pray your shawl finds its way home to you again.
    Maplewing is georgous.

  22. So much fun to spend time with everyone but I’m still so mad about Oh Canada. I’m just stunned that someone who knows what goes into it would do that. ARGH! I got one word. Karma.

  23. The theft is so sad. We should be able to believe that crafters are honest, that they are “one of us”, there for the enjoyment. Even at quilt shows or shops, large quilts are stolen. What enjoyment do these persons derive from using a stolen item? Maybe it is monetary gain, but still… is nothing sacred?

  24. It really breaks my heart to know that someone would actually steal that beautiful piece of art. I heard about it over the weekend and I just can’t wrap my head around it. I’m sorry that happened to you.
On a happier note, I picked up some of your lovely Merino/Tussah silk roving and can’t wait to spin it; the color is so beautiful and it’s so incredibly soft.

  25. It is so hard to imagine that something like this would happen when we feel so comfortable around “fiber folk”. You’ve put out your plea for return in very nice way.. I’d be so hurt and hopping mad. Here’s hoping.
Otherwise, it was a great weekend. Your booth was beautiful. The friends over the top.

  26. As a Canadian, I feel doubly awful that somebody stole your beautiful shawl! The nerve of people is startling. But from a setting like that…I never would have though it possible. It looks like a tremendous event. I wish there was one like that here!

  29. I am so sorry about your shawl. It is hard to believe that someone would do something like that. I am hoping that the person that did it will have second thoughts and send it on its way home.
We had someone walk off with one of the door prizes at our horticulture symposium yesterday!
It is so sad that people feel the need to take what it not theirs.

The fact that someone stole from you.
Seems the way things are going for these fiber fairs and wool festivals.
    Sorry to read that.

Have had to take the candy with me.

  33. i once asked a LYS owner if she wanted a drivers license number when i paid with a check and she informed me that “knitters don’t bounce checks!” she honestly hadn’t had that problem! i can’t imagine someone stealing OH CANADA!!! that is far worse than bouncing a check, which one can do by mistake. taking someone else’s much-loved shawl could hardly be done accidentally. i hope that knowing that all of us sympathize will make you feel a bit better…

  36. I live in Europe and there are few fibre fairs and none that have such a wide choice. I envy you all over there being able to go and choose fibre firsthand. We can only order on Internet and hope for the best.
It seems that there is a shawl stealer gang out there since someone in Chicago had all their shawls stolen several months ago too. I think there should be posters like for missing people so that the person who stole it could never wear it in public and pretend that he/she knit it her/himself.
